Parent Judges

Thank you for your commitment to your students and this community. We cannot have a tournament without your significant investment in judging. You as parents have a better understanding of what these students have gone through to get to this competition.

Because of some of the continued restrictions and views by the general public, Community Judges may not be as strong as in the past. Therefore, parent judges are needed in every round of the tournament to maintain its integrity and ensure the tournament runs on schedule. The judging requirement is based on the child's number of speech and debate events. If the judging requirement cannot be met by a competitor's parent(s), the competitor can arrange for a substitute judge(s) to fulfill the requirement.

All IE Competitors are required to provide a judge for a minimum of two rounds for every IE event they are registered for. For example, if you register for three IE events, then you are required to provide judges for a minimum of six rounds.

All Debate Competitors are required to provide a judge for three rounds.

Clubs are encouraged to work together to fulfill the judging requirements for their members.

Students will not be able to complete their registration without a parent also registering as a judge. Parent judge registration allows you to select the time slots that are compatible with your schedule and provides us with reliable information to keep the tournament on schedule. We look forward to seeing you at your scheduled judging times.

If you have unique circumstances that do not allow you to attend the tournament and fulfill the parent judging requirements then email the Tournament Director at logoscolorado@gmail.com.

All parents who have not been through a Stoa Judge Orientation are required to participate in one of these enjoyable sessions before judging either speech or debate.

Parent Judge Meals

Food cost is the largest drain on the tournament budget and is typically more than the facility cost. While we are able to provide light meals to the Community and Alumni judges, we cannot economically do this for the parents. Please feel free to eat from the snack area in the judge lounge, however, if you desire to dine on the full meals, please purchase the Parent Judge Meal in the "Purchase Meals" section of the registration. For a single price of $25 or $35, you can get all six to eight meals we provide for the students. This works out to just over $3/meal and helps to cover the cost of the food.

Parent Judge Prizes

As has been the tradition at MHQ for the last several years, parents will also compete for prizes for judging, and it isn't just for the ballots you get, but for the number of times you come to Ballot Admin while ballots are being distributed. In other words, you can win for just showing up! How often does that happen? And this is no mere green participation ribbon and a pat on the back, but actual prizes. Here's how it works.

Come to the Ballot Admin area at the time ballots are being given out. If you get a ballot, great! Thank you. If you don't get a ballot, thanks for coming and showing your willingness to take one. For either scenario, the Ballot Admin people will place a tick mark by your name in their log book for that round. I guarantee you that if you all come to Ballot Admin you won't all get ballots, but you will get credit for showing up.

The three to five parents with the most tick marks at the end of the tournament will be called to the stage at the Awards Ceremony to be awarded a cash prize. Top prize in the past has been $100 cash.

Thank you in advance for all your efforts to judge and make this a successful tournament. I really appreciate our parents who are willing to go the extra mile.

Chaperones

All competitors must be chaperoned. If a parent will not be on site, a signed medical release form must be provided for the chaperone. A sample medical release can be found by clicking on the medical release tab to the left. Chaperones must also meet the judging requirements for the chaperoned student.
